Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei, has attained the rank of the world’s top five smartphone companies; respectively. This is according to research firm Gartner. Gartner revealed that, in general, global sales of smartphones declined by 12.5% during the year 2020.

Although people generally tried to limit their spending, making buyers to be reluctant in their purchase of smartphones, features like pro-camera and 5G smartphones helped to propel the sale of new smartphones. Apple once again emerged as the top smartphone vendor globally in terms of sales. This achievement comes after full four years. But how did each company fare?  Keep on reading find out how all top five smartphone companies fared during the year 2020.

Apple sold the highest number of smartphones in the world, making it the highest smartphone vendor. Apple became the world’s largest smartphone company in the last quarter of 2020. (The last time the tech company had this title of the top smartphone vendor was in the fourth quarter of 2016).

According to the research firm Gartner, Apple was able to beat Samsung for the number one global smartphone vendor spot thanks to the launch of its 5G iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 12 series was met with great reception by buyers and it helped Apple record double digit growth in fourth quarter of 2020.

Samsung faced a year-on-year decline of 14.6% in 2020. The South-Korean based tech giant faced competition from Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo; Chinese smartphone vendors, which grew more aggressive in global markets, outside China and India. Apple and Xiaomi were the only two smartphone vendors in the five-biggest smartphone companies to experience growth, or increase in market performance, in 2020.

The highest retrogression among the top five smartphone vendors was experienced by Huawei. This made the company to lose its second position to Apple in 2020. This decline was brought about by the ban on use of Google applications on Huawei’s smartphones. The impact of the ban wasn’t so friendly, affecting the company’s performance during the year.

In the entire year of 2020, Smartphone sales declined by 12.5%.
